(W)holier than thou

There are three types of people
with holey shoes I know:

Kitchen cooks, especially artists
who have scrimped and saved
          or borrowed and begged
to get a hold of non-slip sole –
so they aren’t quick to let them go
even when the tongue lolls
and a gaping mouth bares teeth as toes

And of course the holy people
who pilgrimage across the lands
each step carrying a sore body
across hot and hellish sands
you won’t find holier shoes
never mind such pure feet and hands

And finally the last type
we place our pity upon
the depressed who do not care for self
with barely strength to go on
not prioritizing choices,
demonstrating poor mental health
those who do not understand
how to share their wealth
seeking immediate gratification
employing regressed survival skills
this last type worries me the most
as their holes are never filled
