Buddhism Meditation Monday Motivation

Catch & Release | MM 6

If you yourself are free from self concern, you will find it much easier to perform virtuous actions such as caring for others.

From Geshe-la’s texts and the perspective of karma, consider first the disadvantages of cherishing oneself alone.

Then consider the many advantages of cherishing others – including creating a future life free from terrible suffering and one in which you are receiving good care when “you” need it.

Remember, it is NOT selfish for you to do something to relieve your FUTURE suffering. You have a hundred selfs every moment. The self in the future tomorrow and the self in ten years are completely different selfs than the ones being experienced now.

Even still, we say “my self” as though there is one, consistently the same, and never-ending, changeless self. We believe that there is a solid personality that defines who “I am” in any given moment. People see a “me” when they look at me.

While we maintain identification with this unchanging “self”, “me”, or “I”, in the same unmindful breath we are striving to change, become better, or alter our circumstances.

That necessarily demands change. A changeable self! Many selfs. A new one each moment.

How can we hold such contradicting views and expect good progress? Yes, We are going one step forward, but always backward at the same time. At best, we are standing still. Then what proof do we have that we have performed any effort at all? Where lies our virtue? Our happiness?

We must start seeing the hypocrisy in our own mind, and simply call it out. We should get used to talking to ourself in a world that seems to forbid peaceful moments. We can reflect when we have a moment:

“It’s not selfish to do something that will improve my happiness tomorrow. In fact, it is much more virtuous to do that instead of giving myself some kind of instant gratification now. If I feel any pleasure at all from immediately satisfying my desires, it wears off right away. It is far more satisfying to work towards a happier self tomorrow than to waste this moment on mindless indulgence.
By changing my ways, I am training my mind and benefiting not only my future selfs but all living beings.
How wonderful.”

If you are able to release, even a little, at grasping that there is only one changeless self, “you” (“me”) then you can bless the minds of your future selfs. You can do something to benefit yourself tomorrow, and start practicing the easiest way to be selfless: taking care of the future “you” you think you see every day.

Although this is just a beginner practice, the goal is to get your mind accustomed to doing two things:
1) stop seeing your “self” (“me”) as a constant, unchanging thing
2) be selfless with yourself then others

You can acknowledge it is not selfish to enjoy something that you worked for, or waited for patiently, or performed virtue to receive. In fact, the only way we experience enjoyments is by performing virtuous actions which are the actual cause and catalyst for happiness. Delaying gratification is a supremely important practice in a time when we demand gratification be instant. It reminds us that the true causes of my happiness are my previous actions of virtue such as giving to others, caring for others when they were ill, teaching others how to be happy, rejoicing… It reminds us that there is still a space between the good deeds we perform and the rewards we receive – and we will definitely receive the effects.

Since we may only encounter a few beings a day,  even if we work in a busy environment or include all the insects we pass by, we can take advantage of the time we already spend cherishing ourselfs by changing the object of our cherishing (me, right now) to a different object (ex. me, tomorrow). We are with our selfs all day long! It is important that we start thinking, “How can I benefit myself tomorrow?” “How can I make myself happier next week?” INSTEAD OF “How can I satisfy my craving/hunger/thirst/desire right now?”

We should seek to help others, and put them first whenever we encounter other living beings. Eventually we will abandon the deceptive “me,” altogether. But until we become high level Great Scope practitioners, during the time we are not with others, we can do things to benefit our future selfs like planning meals for the week, getting difficult items off our to-do lists to prevent stress arising, seeking out challenges that help us grow (learning a new skill, exercising), and, of course, meditating!

Although we all wish to be free from self-grasping, we must acknowledge we have it until we attain a direct realization of emptiness – and purify all the imprints of ignorance. Until then, we will grasp. So why not use it to our advantage and travel this path swiftly while at the same time destroy its power to harm us while we train our minds to become invincible?

When is the last time you celebrated doing the “right” thing even when it was difficult? We should experience this challenge daily if we wish to become stronger people. If we wish to become Spiritual Warriors.

Don’t forget to celebrate your spiritual victories. That’s what introspection, journaling and sangha (spiritual friends) are for!

May your path be blessed.

The End is the Beginning | TT 3

A Message from the Tarot:

The Tarot of the Divine – November 9, 2021

Eight of Wands

As things get colder outside, you are prepared to warm yourself with the fire of your passion and creativity. Even though recent energies have been chaotic, challenging and even lonely for some, life has given you an opportunity to organize yourself – especially around the things that are important. Right now you are either in a place to put things in order or you are finally experiencing a flow to your work.

The Eight of Wands reflects not just your determination and drive, but your ability to master it through action. When you get organized and put effort into accomplishing the details of your goals, you will see how far you can go. It is important at this time not to get too bogged down with the details but to keep the larger picture in mind. When it comes to your work, jobs and ambition, the eight is a great card to see. Though this card deals with our creativity energies, it remains unemotional as it’s more about our efforts towards external accomplishment and not our inner world.

In this deck, we see the North American Lenape Legend illustrated representing quick decisive actions. The crow on the card makes some self-sacrifice as his wings are singed while he flies to deliver warmth to the cold earth below. It is important to remember that your temporary sacrifice in the name of your passions that inspire others will pay off immensely – both for yourself and for the people you touch with your kindness and creations.

Take advantage of this energy and your momentum to experience the excitement and results this journey will bring.

Journal Questions:

What have you been working on that is finally coming together? Where are you seeing the fruits of your labours? What sacrifices have you made to pursue your dreams? How has this freed you from previous limiting beliefs? What’s next?

A Message from the Oracle:

The Wild Unknown Archetypes – November 9, 2021

The Dead End

Wow! This card feels like such a contrast to the Eight of Wands energy of movement. Is it a warning or a prophecy? Or is it actually the doorway through which your efforts are carrying you?

I believe this card will speak to different readers in different ways. For some, the appearance of a dead end will make us question the path we are on. If we have put much work into something and we come up against the same obstacles we always have, those that make us feel like turning back and giving up, perhaps we should question what it is that we actually want from this journey. What are we doing in the same way that is no longer working for us? How are we letting the darkness of our path overshadow its important meaning?

For others, the dead end is an illusion. The knot of black branches and thorns is but a shadow. There is light behind, and we can reach it if we do not let the negativity or naysaying of others hold us back. There is but one hand blocking our way. It speaks not with words, but with actions. If we use our creativity, we may easily move around this block to a new place.

For all, we should remember that each end is actually a beginning. Life remains cyclical, and there is no point to fighting cycles of birth, death and rebirth. Instead, we can strive to understand them and take advantage of the opportunity to make meaning with what we are given. Should you continue to strive to accomplish your goals through your creativity, determination and drive, you must be prepared to say goodbye to the things no longer serving you and be prepared to welcome “Life’s Beginning.” Pay strong attention to what happens at the moment you accept the ending. Feel the relief.

Today’s Reminder:

Note that in most stories and movies the moment the protagonist reaches The Dead End, something riveting happens. You are the protagonist.

Affirmations Love Letters

Love Letter to Oneself

To my changing self,

I am a spectacular person. I love myself inside and out. I love myself unconditionally. I love all my excellent qualities, good qualities and poor qualities. I love that I have poor qualities because my suffering gives me the opportunity to empathize with others, develop compassion, and wish to become a better person. I love my good qualities because they feel natural, I can strengthen them and improve their power. I love my excellent qualities because they allow me to serve living beings, shine a positive light in the darkness, and be an example, or leader, to others.

In all ways I strive to be virtuous: kind, compassionate, free from misery, wise, patient and understanding. Now, there is not a day that goes by where I do not do something wonderful for my higher self and for others. Once there was a time I lived in the dark. My only friends were loneliness and despair; I believed good was not possible, all was lost. I had not the will nor wisdom to make intentional efforts to consciously design and build my future. I did not understand cause and effect, karma. I have suffered at the hands of my self-cherishing mind (ego/pain-body). I have made bad choices.

Still, with faith I have lost all despair. Even when things are difficult, even when I lose control, even when I am hanging by a thread, there arises a resilient mind of faith that I can and will keep going, and I can and will be better.

This letter is to affirm that in the process of becoming better, I love myself as I am. For keeping this desire in my heart and never giving up means that I have already achieved my wishes and dreams, even as I work to achieve them. There is nothing I cannot do.

Love, my wisdom self

Feel free to adapt this letter for your self, for your own expression of love to the beautiful soul inside, the soul struggling to get through the shit. It deserves your unconditional love. It deserves your support, your compassion and your striving for permanent happiness and liberation from suffering.
