Addicted to the melodrama

In my heart of hearts
I know

I know
what happiness is

I feel it exists
I know where it is to be found
under the bones, beneath the ribcage,
sub atomic the heart, in the subtle
in the very subtle mind

I know where all is found, created
produced phenomena
mistaken, mistaken
still mistaken
so there’s the rub
the grasp for external things
produced from an internal space
perceived from a point
moving through time and space
but a point, a personality nonetheless
     — non-existent so to speak
yet hard to see       (until it’s not)
and it’s the rub that’s missed
the feeling, the touch,
the understood cause
of pleasure, pain
the smack, the beating
and don’t get me started on the aural
     — tongue lashings
to teach you tough lessons

What the fuck, right?

do you ever forget that people are real?
do you treat them too much like the dream characters you know they are?
can you feel – or is there a shelf in the way?

will someone please un-install the shelf!?

I think it can be recycled.
donate it. Please, help me.

the ledge is the safest place to be
if it perpetuates such refuge practice

but I don’t want to be there anymore

where do I want to be?

have I done the work, made the effort
that must render the results
effects I’ve created mindfully       (somehow)

and    somehow   I’ll do it again
                   ((blessings))

but oh! how I could do without
the melodramatic feeling!
the melancholy that arises,
                           such ache!
as if I am on the verge of losing
              My Attachment

balancing
the moment, a magic moment
while seeing the potential – certain!
decease, death of these magic moments

no phenomena exists in the same way
for a second moment
care to think about that?

the certainty of change
still surprises you;           cry about it
mourn the wisdom you missed
but receive what’s given to you
now                   — and why not happily?

you’ve got this
after all, you’ve got the lines —
just practice them
as an actor, rehearse rehearse
perchance to entertain…   to fail…
to fly

imagination is all you need
to reach the end of the path

transform the melodrama
enjoy each step as you walk it

What the fuck, right?

Waiting’s Confusion

I wait for peace, but it does not come.
I throw myself into old enjoyments,
searching for happiness, but finding none

I am desperate, not a wise guy
so I’m never comprehending why
ever turning a blind eye to the truth

a truth delivered directly to my hands
and firmly ignored, as I close and lock
freedom’s door, I choose confusion

                          did I choose my slavery?
and now I wonder how the children cry
why me?

Catch & Release | MM 6

If you yourself are free from self concern, you will find it much easier to perform virtuous actions such as caring for others.

From Geshe-la’s texts and the perspective of karma, consider first the disadvantages of cherishing oneself alone.

Then consider the many advantages of cherishing others – including creating a future life free from terrible suffering and one in which you are receiving good care when “you” need it.

Remember, it is NOT selfish for you to do something to relieve your FUTURE suffering. You have a hundred selfs every moment. The self in the future tomorrow and the self in ten years are completely different selfs than the ones being experienced now.

Even still, we say “my self” as though there is one, consistently the same, and never-ending, changeless self. We believe that there is a solid personality that defines who “I am” in any given moment. People see a “me” when they look at me.

While we maintain identification with this unchanging “self”, “me”, or “I”, in the same unmindful breath we are striving to change, become better, or alter our circumstances.

That necessarily demands change. A changeable self! Many selfs. A new one each moment.

How can we hold such contradicting views and expect good progress? Yes, We are going one step forward, but always backward at the same time. At best, we are standing still. Then what proof do we have that we have performed any effort at all? Where lies our virtue? Our happiness?

We must start seeing the hypocrisy in our own mind, and simply call it out. We should get used to talking to ourself in a world that seems to forbid peaceful moments. We can reflect when we have a moment:

“It’s not selfish to do something that will improve my happiness tomorrow. In fact, it is much more virtuous to do that instead of giving myself some kind of instant gratification now. If I feel any pleasure at all from immediately satisfying my desires, it wears off right away. It is far more satisfying to work towards a happier self tomorrow than to waste this moment on mindless indulgence.
By changing my ways, I am training my mind and benefiting not only my future selfs but all living beings.
How wonderful.”

If you are able to release, even a little, at grasping that there is only one changeless self, “you” (“me”) then you can bless the minds of your future selfs. You can do something to benefit yourself tomorrow, and start practicing the easiest way to be selfless: taking care of the future “you” you think you see every day.

Although this is just a beginner practice, the goal is to get your mind accustomed to doing two things:
1) stop seeing your “self” (“me”) as a constant, unchanging thing
2) be selfless with yourself then others

You can acknowledge it is not selfish to enjoy something that you worked for, or waited for patiently, or performed virtue to receive. In fact, the only way we experience enjoyments is by performing virtuous actions which are the actual cause and catalyst for happiness. Delaying gratification is a supremely important practice in a time when we demand gratification be instant. It reminds us that the true causes of my happiness are my previous actions of virtue such as giving to others, caring for others when they were ill, teaching others how to be happy, rejoicing… It reminds us that there is still a space between the good deeds we perform and the rewards we receive – and we will definitely receive the effects.

Since we may only encounter a few beings a day,  even if we work in a busy environment or include all the insects we pass by, we can take advantage of the time we already spend cherishing ourselfs by changing the object of our cherishing (me, right now) to a different object (ex. me, tomorrow). We are with our selfs all day long! It is important that we start thinking, “How can I benefit myself tomorrow?” “How can I make myself happier next week?” INSTEAD OF “How can I satisfy my craving/hunger/thirst/desire right now?”

We should seek to help others, and put them first whenever we encounter other living beings. Eventually we will abandon the deceptive “me,” altogether. But until we become high level Great Scope practitioners, during the time we are not with others, we can do things to benefit our future selfs like planning meals for the week, getting difficult items off our to-do lists to prevent stress arising, seeking out challenges that help us grow (learning a new skill, exercising), and, of course, meditating!

Although we all wish to be free from self-grasping, we must acknowledge we have it until we attain a direct realization of emptiness – and purify all the imprints of ignorance. Until then, we will grasp. So why not use it to our advantage and travel this path swiftly while at the same time destroy its power to harm us while we train our minds to become invincible?

When is the last time you celebrated doing the “right” thing even when it was difficult? We should experience this challenge daily if we wish to become stronger people. If we wish to become Spiritual Warriors.

Don’t forget to celebrate your spiritual victories. That’s what introspection, journaling and sangha (spiritual friends) are for!

May your path be blessed.

A Caterwaul

Can I tempt?
Can I tease?
Can I bring you to your knees?

I never knew I had a power
then I heard the beggar plead

He needed more, he begged to give
He needed more of me to live

I did laugh
I did cry
and to his horror, I denied

I never knew I had a power
then I saw the beggar die

I needed more, I begged to give
I needed more of them to live

I did tempt
I did tease
and I tried my best to please

I disbelieved I had a power
And so delusion ruled with ease

I faded in, I faded out,
I turned to faith from foolish doubt

I did laugh
I did cry
in compassion I now abide

I believe I have a power
and with love I purify

Fragrant White Water Lily

Once you told me
if I was a flower I would be
a fragrant white water lily

I couldn’t help but feel pride
that such a thought did arise
in your less-than-poetic mind
about me

Now I see it was a sign

Like a beautiful lotus growing from the mud
I become strong, resilient and kind
Amidst cruel & non-virtuous crud

How you teach non-attachment
didn’t feel right but now I see how it’s wise

Maybe one day I’ll realize you were simply
my Spiritual Guide

Delayed Gratification

I have promised patience
in exchange for a kingdom of happiness

I have promised patience
in exchange for an appearance of love

I have promised patience
in exchange for unattached enjoyments

I have promised patience
for you, so we can complete the path together

So I wait, like a princess in her tower
with patience, my Buddha nature I empower

I promised patience, and I wait for you
with faith unwavering, my heart is true.

A Wish

I will never convince you
I have abandoned my madness
As long as you are shrouded in yours

You will not, cannot see
past your veil of ignorance
to what I’ve now become

But every day, with purest love
I wish only everlasting peace
and happiness upon you

My Mask Slips | FF 8

I have begun to forget my mask

I have started longing to be open about my dissent
from new normal

I am not a pawn to progress political agendas
and power struggles

Just a person longing for the rights & freedoms &
peace of her parents

Was divorce a prediction of politicians’
same social strategies?

Yelling, arguing toward dominion
never peace

If we remove the masks we hide behind &
relent our ruthless blaming

Can we find another way,
more loving, to behave?

Take Back Your Time | Session 3

A rebellion against social media, the true corporate time thief:

Are you tired of being robbed of your choices, implanted and imbibed with capitalist messages dictating your every thought and move? Buy this drink and earn stars! Buy this and earn points! Try this thing and get a medal! Give your money and your freedom of choice away! Give your safety over to those with a track record of incompetence – a slate wiped clean by expensive lawyers and void of future liability (read the fine print).

Why continue to ignore credible sources who say the same thing: discover your mind. Go within. This isn’t a time wasting ploy like the invention swathed in your sweaty palms, tightly, vigilantly held, never disconnected yet always believing we’re disconnected. The paradox is not emptiness – the paradox is the life we’re living now: senseless, meaningless, when you add up minutes spent giving nothing to the world. Nothing! Giving nothing of ourselves to any being – just consuming and being consumed by a sickly intoxicant, cancerous and eating away at our minds, our senses until senseless we never drink our fill and wish for more minutes to pour into the void of despair and disaster.

No more!

Take back your time!

And the Path is Dark | FF 2

For the first time in history
We have lost daily danger
Robots doing most arduous work
Steadfast protection from perceived external threats

So we no longer fight to live
Turning our choices over to untrained professionals
Motivated by momentary monetary gains
Unhappy lacking distraction in still moments

We interchanged dogmas
So we can scoff at virtue, instead
Worshipping power and profit strawmen
Spiritual faith exchanged for political cocksucking

We are no longer compelled to fix ourselves
We are machinery now repairable with medication
Our bodies broken before birth
Necessitating genetic modification

We manipulate nature’s randomness
We have erased beauty because man perceives
Chaos where nature reigns pure and cyclical
Revealing the path we walk now is narrow

Not spacious and hopeful and bright
